  • Today, the Newtown Florist Club hosts the 'March for a Cause' MLK Walk at Peach State Bank in Gainesville at 11 a.m. Additional MLK events include parades on Jan. 19 in Athens and Lawrenceville and festivals, concerts and recitals in Helen and Dahlonega.  AccessWDUN

  • Tin Drum Asian Kitchen and Boba Tea Bar opened off Old Winder Highway/Ga. 211 just outside Hall County — offering a new spot for Asian cuisine and boba tea — and gives locals another option for fresh dining.  The Gainesville Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • North Georgia Wildlife Park in Cleveland is celebrating the rare birth of a honey badger—the first born in captivity in the U.S. in over 15 years—and will feature special animal encounters for visitors.  The Gainesville Times

  • The Hall County School District announced that Eddie Millwood (director of digital convergence) will retire at the end of the 2025-26 school year after 31 years of service.  The Gainesville Times
  • Cherokee Bluff Middle School eighth grader Natalie Taylor won the Hall County School District annual spelling bee, marking a proud moment for local students.  The Gainesville Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Aeroseal will host an informational meeting at St. John Baptist Church (747 E.E. Butler Parkway) on Jan. 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. to help residents learn if they qualify for Georgia’s Home Energy Rebate Program; bring ID, utility bills, and proof of residency.  AccessWDUN

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Hall County Sheriff's Office announced Friday that retired K9 Timo received a clean bill of health from the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine (UGA CVM) after recovering from a spinal infection that had caused paralysis; Timo now enjoys retirement and cheers his handlers.  97.5 Glory
  • Retired K-9 Timo was given a clean bill of health after a spinal infection left him paralyzed six months ago.  The Gainesville Times

  • A developer plans to build 72,500 sqft of warehouse and office space across from an elementary school off Athens Highway/U.S. 129 in East Hall - the project remains in its early proposal stage.  The Gainesville Times

  • Lakeview Academy's boys basketball team extended its win streak to 11 games after beating Dominion Christian 75-46 on Thursday (Jan.15) in Gainesville.  The Gainesville Times
  • Gainesville High coach Chan Brown was named to the National Hall of Fame for high school coaches, an honor recognizing his years of leadership and success in baseball — a significant milestone in his career.  The Gainesville Times
  • Gainesville's Lady Red Elephants defeated Richmond Hill in a state dual meet on Thursday, Jan. 15, advancing to the state championship tournament for the third straight season.  The Gainesville Times
  • Gainesville High graduate Alex Payne—an offensive lineman who played his first season at Southern Cal—signed with the University of Virginia and will compete for the Cavaliers in college football this season.  The Gainesville Times
