EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Six nontraditional female students, including one from Gainesville, received $2,000 scholarships at University of North Georgia's Women’s Holiday Scholarship Luncheon. The event celebrated 16 years of scholarship awards (and 22 years of support from local donors). 97.5 Glory
- ➤ At a hearing Monday at the Georgia Capitol, lawmakers gave unanimous support for legislation to ban cellphones in public high schools. The measure now moves forward in the legislative process (if passed, schools may soon update their rules). The Gainesville Times
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Tasha Murchison from Northeast Georgia Health System was named the national 2025 Educator of the Year by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare + she was honored for her outstanding work in clinical simulation education. The Gainesville Times
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ A developer has proposed 81 single-family homes along a busy Flowery Branch road — the site had a plan for 116 townhomes rejected by the city council. Officials will review the proposal soon to decide on the next steps. The Gainesville Times
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Cherokee Bluff's boys won against Oconee County in a Region 8-3A basketball game on Feb. 3 in Flowery Branch, keeping the Bears boys & girls in contention for the No. 2 tournament seed. The Gainesville Times
- ➤ Hall County is sending 52 high school wrestlers to state sectionals — teams from Gainesville and North Hall include 10 athletes each vying for state championship spots. The Gainesville Times
- ➤ On Tuesday, Feb. 3, Gainesville’s Red Elephants beat Milton to extend their winning streak to 23 games. They will play Friday to try to clinch the Region 7-5A regular season title. The Gainesville Times
- ➤ Lakeview Academy boys defeated Loganville Christian on Jan. 15 in Gainesville — a key win in their basketball season. The Gainesville Times
- ➤ East Hall junior Braydon Langston became Boys Player of the Week after he averaged 23.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 6.5 blocks to help his team win two games last week (he is recovering from injury). The Gainesville Times
