COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Gainesville will host a Spring Cleaning event during Earth Week from April 21 to April 25 with sessions from 9 a.m. to noon and options for extended slots until 4 p.m.—community groups, schools, and local volunteers will help clean streams, parks, and neighborhoods. Participants may choose tasks such as collecting garbage or removing weeds to support the beautification project.  AccessWDUN
  • The Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club installed a new stability dock at Lake Lanier Olympic Park on April 9 to help younger members and people with disabilities enter their boats safely (the dock holds canoes and kayaks securely until users paddle them into the lake).  AccessWDUN

  • A Gainesville man allegedly climbed into a parked car at Walmart holding a knife—Cumming Police Department said they are investigating the incident.  The Gainesville Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Billions of red-eyed cicadas from Brood XIV are expected to emerge in north Georgia later this month when soil reaches 64 degrees; experts say the insects will sing loud mating calls—signals that can hit up to 120 decibels—while shedding their shells to become adults ready to mate.  FOX 5 Atlanta

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Georgia DOT is asking for public comments on its project to widen and rebuild Dahlonega Highway from Price Road to Yellow Creek Road near Murrayville—this work will include adding three roundabouts at Elrod Road, Hubert Stephens Road/Fieldale Farms Driveway and Kanaday Road/Old Dahlonega Road as well as sidewalks to reduce congestion and improve safety. The project phases span from preliminary engineering in 2023 to construction in 2030, and feedback will be accepted until May 23.  97.5 Glory
  • Anna White Howard has been named U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge for Gainesville—filling the vacancy after Judge J. Clay Fuller's retirement. She assumed her duties on April 1—after teaching legal writing at the University of Georgia School of Law and clerking for two federal judges.  97.5 Glory
  • GDOT is asking local residents for input on a plan to widen Thompson Bridge Road with three roundabouts — public comments will be accepted until May 23 — as the project aims to ease traffic flow.  The Gainesville Times
