  • Four Gainesville area first responder agencies received grants from the Firehouse Subs Safety Foundation for lifesaving equipment. CULTURE NEWS

  • Gainesville-based Capstone Property Group received the 2026 Excellence in Rehabilitation Award for restoring the Walton Jackson Building, a 1930s Art Deco landmark in downtown built after a tornado.   • Eight authentic Mexican restaurants in Hall County celebrate Cinco de Mayo + Taco Tuesday today as they offer specials that honor Mexican heritage and community.  The Gainesville Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Georgia Ports Authority opened Gainesville Inland Port on Monday on White Sulphur Road. The 104-acre, $134 million facility links I-85 and I-985 to a 324-mile rail network and is expected to cut 26,000 truck trips (reducing over 20,000 metric tons of CO2) in its first year.  AccessWDUN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brenau University celebrated 347 undergrad & grad degrees on Friday, May 1 by awarding 106 master’s, 37 specialist, 51 doctoral or terminal master’s and 102 undergraduate degrees, with 69 given to women’s college graduates, while President David L. Barnett led the ceremony.  AccessWDUN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials launched Park GVL today to manage parking in downtown Gainesville; residents scan a QR code & check in with their license plates for two free hours before paying $4 per hour from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and citations may follow for noncompliance.  AccessWDUN

  • Ninth-grader Sawyer Sistrunk (North Hall High School) marked one year since his brain cancer diagnosis at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, growing close to the hospital staff as he continues his fight.  The Gainesville Times
