ECONOMY NEWS

  • Frozen poultry exports increased by 8.5% at the Port of Savannah from February 2025 to February 2026. Local producers boost shipments with a direct rail connection via the Gainesville Inland Port (opened May 4).  WSB-TV
  • In April, Hall County reached a record with 108,889 employed residents and 109,800 jobs, officials said (numbers increased by 297 over the month and 1,777 from last year) as the unemployment rate dropped to 2.3%.  97.5 Glory

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gainesville High and four other high schools will test drones armed with pepper spray to stop active shooter threats starting in the fall. The half-million-dollar pilot program by Campus Guardian Angel will run through next school year.  FOX 5 Atlanta

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recent rain has improved drought conditions in parts of Northeast Georgia, including counties like Stephens, Hart (and Franklin), though many areas remain in severe drought.   • The American Cancer Society on Wednesday recommended a blood test from Guardant Health for colorectal cancer screening, offering an easier alternative for those who find colonoscopies or stool tests too burdensome.  97.5 Glory
  • Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton will open its expanded emergency room on July 25, as announced on Facebook. The facility is part of a second phase that adds parking and a helipad to support growing patient needs.  The Gainesville Times
