ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Aiden Tomberlin lost his leg on June 18 in a crash on Mountain View Road while testing a new exhaust on his Honda; his brother said doctors are not sure he will walk again (the injury was very serious).  The Gainesville Times

CRIME NEWS

  • The alleged rape victim's brother testified at the Hall County Magistrate Court on June 20 that on the day of the incident he, his sister and her friend went tubing in Helen and then visited the Village Square Apartments pool in Gainesville — where his sister started crying — and that suspect Amelbis Alvarado Dippiton, arrested on June 1 and held without bond, raped her multiple times, prompting Judge Margaret Gregory to transfer his case to superior court.  97.5 Glory

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Trey McPhaul, a local business owner and community advocate, announced his candidacy for the Gainesville City School Board District 2 on Friday, June 20. He said he will focus on supporting students—teacher retention, safe and inclusive school environments, and engaging families in the district.  AccessWDUN

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Hall County family is asking the FDA to approve an experimental drug called elamipretide to help their four-year-old daughter Hope who has a rare mitochondrial disorder — tests in Philadelphia show the drug helps her. The Filchak family travels for Hope’s care and says that if approved, the drug could give her many more happy years.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton received $300,000 from a recent fundraiser and will use the funds for hospital expansion including a new patient room in its temporary emergency department. Hospital officials say the donation will help improve patient care.  The Gainesville Times
