  • Newtown Florist Club, founded in 1950 by women who sent flowers to residents in mourning, is marking its 75th anniversary this year with a series of events in September and a Facebook Live session next Monday (Re-connect Us) to unite past and present community members. CRIME NEWS

  • A Buford man remains in Hall County Jail with no bond after being arrested on July 18 for rape, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, battery under the Family Violence Act, and terroristic threats—officers responded just after 9:30 p.m. to a domestic dispute at his residence where he is accused of slapping, choking, and sexually assaulting a female victim.  97.5 Glory

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hall County Schools reported its highest-ever AP exam results on Feb. 26—recording the highest pass rate and marking a decade-long trend of improvement.  The Gainesville Times
  • The Gainesville Board of Education announced that it will not appoint an interim member for the vacant District 2 seat—voters will elect a new representative in the general election on November 4. Kris Nordholz resigned on June 2nd after moving away and two candidates have expressed interest in running.  AccessWDUN

  • A new report by Upgraded Points shows that Gainesville households with two adults and two children face an effective tax rate of 12.9%—ranking 69th among 228 small U.S. metros. The rate means these households pay about $13,079 in combined federal and state taxes compared to a national middle-class average of $15,522.  97.5 Glory
