  • A retired couple from Gainesville—who believe local journalism is vital—has issued a challenge urging neighbors to support local news. They stress that strong journalism is needed to keep the community well informed.  The Gainesville Times
  • Explore Gainesville and the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville will collect nonperishable food items to benefit The Georgia Mountain Food Bank. The food drive will be held in downtown Gainesville square with live music starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1 and donations accepted at the Gainesville Welcome Center from July 28 to Aug. 1.  97.5 Glory

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bob Swoszowski, now retired, talked about his 52-year career as a McDonald’s owner and operator in Hall County. He and his late partner Frank Markette opened their first restaurant on Jesse Jewell Parkway on April 1, 1973 — his Gainesville office now holds a sign and photo from the first McDonald’s Monday on July 21.  The Gainesville Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Several school buses in Hall County School District now have automated cameras that record vehicles passing stopped buses, and sheriff's deputies will review the footage to impose fines on violators. The new measure follows a Georgia law called Addy's Law— which sets the minimum fine at $1000.  97.5 Glory
  • Gainesville High School’s Sammy Smith Media Center has set aside a special section that features books by its graduates & the display includes a long list of notable authors celebrated for their achievements.  The Gainesville Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Plans for townhomes, extra retail space and a special event facility in south Gainesville will be reviewed by the Planning & Appeals Board on Aug. 12. The townhomes are proposed for a half acre on Chestnut Street between High Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard — while the retail and event facility is planned for the corner of Atlanta Highway and Mimosa Street.  97.5 Glory
