COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The daughters of late Gainesville philanthropist Peggy Walters reached a settlement with eight local charities after a nearly two-year legal battle over their mother's will — the will had allocated 40% of her estate to the charities. The agreement resolves the dispute and determines how much each charity will receive.  The Gainesville Times
  • The City of Gainesville is launching its first Gainesville Chicken Festival Sticker Design Contest to celebrate 20 years of the festival — the contest is free and open to all Gainesville-Hall County residents who submit artwork in any medium. Entries must include the artist's full name, age and contact info and be received by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 for judging before the festival on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Lake Lanier Olympic Park.  97.5 Glory

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Monday night, the Gainesville City Schools Board of Education held its first hearing for its tentative FY2026 budget that predicts just over $110 million in expenditures and a rollback millage rate of 6.092 mills. Superintendent Jeremy Williams explained rising costs from state mandates will require using about half a million dollars from reserves and said a second hearing will be held on August 18 at 5 p.m. — the district plans to stay financially stable.  AccessWDUN
  • Students returned for their first day at Calhoun City Schools, Gainesville City Schools, Social Circle City Schools, Forsyth County Schools & Haralson County Schools on Tuesday while Forsyth County began enforcing a cellphone ban for elementary and middle school students during class and allowed high school students phone use only at lunch.  WSB-TV

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Lake Lanier has been named one of the top 10 fishing spots nationwide for Labor Day weekend—anglers will have the chance to catch striped and spotted bass along with largemouth and crappie while enjoying its vast shorelines and warm weather.
