CRIME NEWS

  • A suspect drove a stolen truck from a Gainesville dealership on Aug. 6 and struck another car while fleeing, forcing it off Candler Road and killing the driver, according to Georgia State Patrol.  The Gainesville Times
  • A 17-year-old Gainesville man was sentenced after pleading guilty to repeatedly punching another man in the face and pulling out a firearm at a November 2023 Hall County house party — he was charged with aggravated assault and battery.  The Gainesville Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hall County Schools improved attendance rates last year but over one in five students were still chronically absent—one school saw 42% of its students miss 18 days or more, according to Georgia Department of Education data.  The Gainesville Times
  • New state data released Monday shows Gainesville City Schools improved attendance but thousands of students remained chronically absent. Fair Street International Academy recorded the highest rate (21 percent) as noted by the Department of Education.  The Gainesville Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Kim Cook (former Gainesville resident) was appointed as District Health Director for North Central Health District on July 1 and will oversee 13 counties (including Baldwin and Hancock), bringing decades of experience in preventive medicine, epidemiology and clinical research.  97.5 Glory
  • Georgia taxpayers have received more than one billion dollars in refunds so far with roughly 90% already distributed and the rest scheduled to go out this fall for those who filed 2023 and 2024 returns and owe nothing, making them eligible to receive up to $500. The state’s EBT phone system went offline again one day after being restored—officials said a spike in call volume forced a reboot and urged cardholders to use the Connect EBT app.  97.5 Glory

  • J's Place Recovery Center and community partners will host the 6th Annual HALL RECOVERS Night of Awareness on Sunday, August 31 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the amphitheater at Midland Greenway in Gainesville + the event will mark International Overdose Awareness Day with a candlelight vigil, a recovery talk by Quincy Carter, food, music, exhibitors, and free treats.  97.5 Glory
