ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 66-year-old Gainesville man drowned in Lake Lanier after he did not return from his routine evening swim on Wednesday—officials said his body was found by an underwater drone near a private dock early Thursday morning with no foul play suspected.  WSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The North Georgia Community Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant on August 28 to the Gainesville Police Department's Mental Health Clinician Program to support mental health services. Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish said the award—initiated by The Oak Society in 2024 with 25 founders—will boost resources for clinicians addressing mental health challenges.  AccessWDUN
  • Main Street Gainesville was named Downtown of the Year at the 2025 Georgia Downtown Conference on Aug. 27 after the Georgia Downtown Association recognized the city’s strong efforts in downtown revitalization and community collaboration. City Manager Bryan Lackey said that the award and plans to host the upcoming conference underscore Gainesville’s long-term strategy for a vibrant downtown—promising continued investment and engagement.  97.5 Glory
  • City officials said the work on the Main Street Parking Deck's three elevators (which began April 14) finished ahead of schedule, and all are now fully working at (301 Main St. SW) with only one elevator off service at a time.   • Hall County Fire Rescue received a new 38-foot marine rescue boat that will replace its current vessel on Lake Lanier. The boat—built by Lake Assault in Superior, Wisconsin—features a 1500 gpm pump and twin Yamaha 450hp motors and is undergoing crew training for future operations.  97.5 Glory
  • Tyler Crawford, a Hall County shop owner, is running for the District 3 county commissioner seat after zoning delays—he attended a local elections luncheon at Sully's Steamers in Gainesville on August 26.  The Gainesville Times
