COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Georgia Mountain Food Bank held its 16th Annual Empty Bowl Luncheon at Lanier Technical College’s Ramsey Conference Center on Friday, drawing 98 table sponsors + an estimated 1,000 attendees to help raise funds aimed at providing one million meals to local food pantries. The event showcased community-painted ceramic bowls that remind residents of the ongoing need to support 66,000 food insecure people in the area.  AccessWDUN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Department of Labor reported that first-time unemployment claims in Hall County dropped 20.1% from July and 3.9% from last year in August—state claims also fell by 24.7% from July and 19.7% from last year.  97.5 Glory

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gainesville City Councilman Danny Dunagan resigned immediately due to health issues and informed the Mayor and council he could no longer handle his work—he served since 2006, including terms as mayor and a return to the council in 2021. HEALTH NEWS

  • Flowery Branch grad and former South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw is stable in hospital after collapsing Wednesday in South Carolina—he was known as a dynamic playmaker during his prep years.  The Gainesville Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • In Friday's prep football, Gainesville scored 57 points to beat Lanier in a key region game—Flowery Branch won a thriller against Eastside and East Jackson won in a shootout against East Hall in Valhalla.  AccessWDUN
  • North Hall senior wide receiver Ty Kemp is closing in on his 2024 production total as he answered ten interview questions — his performance during a game on Sept. 12 impressed local fans in Gainesville and added to his season focus. He also shared insights about his skill improvement and the team's future outlook.  The Gainesville Times
  • North Hall dominated Dawson County in a softball game by hitting six doubles that secured the win—showing a strong offensive performance throughout the match.  The Gainesville Times
  • On September 18th, Cherokee Bluff struggled in every part of the game and lost to Monroe Area at Yona Park in Flowery Branch—dropping them one game from first— as their record in Region 8-3A was affected.  The Gainesville Times
