- ➤ A new Mexican restaurant, Ay Mama Por Dios! opened on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 1701 Browns Bridge Rd in Gainesville— it offers a menu of traditional Mexican dishes. The Gainesville Times
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A report by the Georgia Hospital Association said Hall County—and based Northeast Georgia Health System contributed nearly $8 billion to the local and state economy in 2023, with its four hospitals in Gainesville, Braselton, Barrow and Lumpkin counties generating $7.64 billion in revenue and sustaining over 23,000 full-time jobs. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, the Gainesville City School System announced a 91.4% graduation rate for the Class of 2025, marking the first time the district exceeded 90% with Gainesville High at 92.6% and Horizon Academy at 89.9%. More than 650 seniors celebrated their achievement at a joint May ceremony—officials credited focused support from teachers and counselors for the success. AccessWDUN
- ➤ WLA Elementary broke ground on a new $40 million building—held on Oct. 2 at the old school site on Winder Highway in Flowery Branch. The school will open in August to serve about 800 students. The Gainesville Times
- ➤ State School Superintendent Richard Woods has selected 79 Georgia students—one from East Hall High School—from 1,235 applicants to serve on the 2025-2026 Student Advisory Council. The council will meet during this school year to advise Woods on state school policies and lead community service projects. 97.5 Glory
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Georgia Forestry Commission lifted the summer ban on outdoor burning in Hall and 53 other north Georgia counties that was in place from May through September. Residents planning burns must follow safety guidelines—keeping burn sites 25 feet from woodlands, 50 feet from structures, and burning only between sunrise and sunset until the fire is completely out. 97.5 Glory
- ➤ A report from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows that more than 98% of Georgia is in drought with only parts of several northeast mountain counties including Habersham, Rabun, Towns, White, Union, Lumpkin and Fannin remaining drought free. Dry weather has lowered Lake Lanier by 0.3 foot to 1067.6 which may affect water supplies in the region. 97.5 Glory

- ➤ The Gainesville City Council will hold a work session at 9 a.m. today in the boardroom on the third floor of the Gainesville Administration Building at 300 Henry Ward Way — the public is welcome to attend. AccessWDUN
- ➤ After a fallen tree knocked down power lines and blocked Green Street near downtown Gainesville on Tuesday, the roadway was fully reopened at 7:30 p.m. and Georgia Power reported only 11 residents in the area remained without power at 8:15 p.m.—a marked improvement from the thousands affected earlier.
