- ➤ All five UNG campuses will host events next week for Proud to be First Week to celebrate first-generation students, and at Gainesville campus on Nov. 6, a financial education workshop by Inspiredu will offer a free laptop to the first 50 students who register — a boost for trailblazers like Gainesville resident Brittney Meza — as part of the university’s effort to support affordable technology. 97.5 Glory
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, a power outage affected about 5,000 Jackson EMC members in Oakwood during mid-morning; a spokeswoman said power was restored to some areas by 10:30—remaining outages persist along McEver Road. 97.5 Glory
- ➤ City officials in Gainesville dedicated a lakeside ballroom at The Boathouse at Lake Lanier as the C. Danny Dunagan, Jr. Ballroom to honor Danny Dunagan— the city’s first elected mayor and longtime council member— during a ribbon cutting before a Thursday morning council meeting. His family joined local leaders as Mayor Sam Couvillon spoke about Dunagan’s lasting impact on the community. AccessWDUN

- ➤ Cherokee Bluff high school softball lost to Heritage-Catoosa (2-1) in extra innings during the 3A state final, leaving them as state runner-up. The Gainesville Times
- ➤ Cherokee Bluff beat East Hall when Jacoby Giuliano kicked a buzzer-beating field goal to secure the playoff spot in the Class 3A state playoffs — the trick plays kept the Vikings at bay in a close game. The Gainesville Times
- ➤ Lanier Christian rallied to beat Creekside Christian — clinching the No. 1 seed for the GAPPS state playoffs. The Lightning will carry this win into upcoming playoff games. The Gainesville Times
- ➤ North Hall boys and girls cross country teams claimed the top spots in Region 6-3A at state sectionals on November 1 in Ringgold—girls securing the overall win—and will compete at the state meet on November 8 in Carrollton. The Gainesville Times
- ➤ North Hall lost to Pickens in the Class 3A state softball tournament elimination round on Oct. 30 in Columbus—ending their season. The Gainesville Times
- ➤ North Hall beat Dawson County on Oct. 31 in Dawsonville to finish an undefeated regular season—now the Trojans await their playoff seeding and first-round opponent. The Gainesville Times
- ➤ Lakeview Academy fell in the first round of the GIAA state playoffs on Oct. 31 when the Lions could not overcome a 13-point, second-half deficit against Piedmont Academy — their late rally failed to close the gap. The Gainesville Times
