COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Georgia Mountain Food Bank will start extra food distributions as SNAP is partially funded in November after a judge ruled that emergency reserve funds be used. Governor Kemp said the state will not give extra money while local pantries in the Feeding Georgia network—serving five counties with about 700,000 meals a month—prepare for a 30% rise in demand.  AccessWDUN
  • Flowery Branch is promoting donations for Meals on Wheels this holiday season by accepting contributions at (City Hall) and (the Department of Fun building) to help local seniors get meals.  WSB-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Melvin Douglas and Victoria Kay Ivester Foundation donated over $1 million to Lanier Technical College to fund programs and scholarships—supporting student success and improving technical training at the college.  The Gainesville Times
  • The Georgia Student Finance Commission has partnered with over 60 colleges to waive admission fees for high school seniors this month—schools in our area include Brenau, Gwinnett Georgia College, Gwinnett Tech, Lanier Tech, North Georgia Tech, Truett-McConnell University, and the University of North Georgia. Students can use the GEORGIA MATCH direct admissions dashboard to get more details and apply without a fee.  97.5 Glory

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Natural Resources warns Gainesville drivers to slow down if they see deer on or near the road as evening times now match deer movement during breeding season, and one deer often means more may be crossing. Drivers are urged to stay in their lane and be ready to stop rather than swerve (which could cause a head-on collision).  WSB-TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Reserve at Riverside, a new townhome development near Longstreet Cafe, is starting to come out of the ground off Riverside Drive in Gainesville. Eight townhomes will be built as part of the project.  The Gainesville Times
