COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Four North Georgia nonprofits will share $200,000 in Opportunity Grants from the North Georgia Community Foundation to support youth programs, education initiatives, recovery services, and accessibility projects. The Gainesville-Hall County winners include Boys and Girls Clubs of Lanier, which will launch a new middle school program at Walters Club (in Hall County), and J’s Place Recovery Center, which will open a second facility in Dawson County.  AccessWDUN

  • Junior Achievement of Northeast Georgia will hold its 16th Annual Business Hall of Fame Gala on February 5 at Lanier Technical College—honoring the Syfan Family, including Jim, Greg and Steve, along with Dixie Truelove and Mike Smith for their business leadership and public service contributions. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of North Georgia unveiled a 326-page master plan on November 19 that outlines major renovations at its Gainesville and Dahlonega campuses over the next decade. Officials expect the plan to transform campus facilities—more details will be shared as projects progress.  The Gainesville Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lake Lanier Association completed the latest phase of its shoreline protection project — Project Armor secured 5,280 feet of lakefront across 16 vulnerable areas to slow island loss and protect drinking water supplies. The project prevents more shoreline from eroding into the lake and helps keep areas deep enough for boaters.  AccessWDUN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northeast Georgia Health System earned a Gold Plus recognition from Target: BP, a program by the American Medical Association and American Heart Association, for showing that more than 70% of its adult patients had their high blood pressure controlled. Georgia Heart Institute improved patient care with new staff training and equipment changes—helping lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes.  97.5 Glory

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dozens of suspended Gainesville High School football players will be allowed to play in Friday's state playoffs quarterfinal against Langston Hughes while four players involved in the fight remain ineligible. The Georgia High School Association and a judge lifted most suspensions after the on-field fight with Brunswick, and athletic leaders praised the team for staying focused during a challenging week — local fans are urged to come out and support the Red Elephants.  WSB-TV
  • CFP rankings show that UGA moved up to number 3 — Georgia Tech rose to number 22 after final at-large selections by Alabama and Notre Dame. These changes set the stage for a competitive college football season.  97.5 Glory
