CRIME NEWS

  • Daniel Thomas Davis parked his Ford F150 at Hardy Chevrolet on Aug.6 in Gainesville when he said he planned to buy a truck, and while fleeing from troopers in a chase he struck and killed 50-year-old Agustin Rivera before entering Hall County Magistrate Court yesterday to face charges including murder and felony fleeing or attempting to elude—Davis also faces DUI, theft by taking, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, and other traffic violations.  The Gainesville Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Norfolk Southern railroad crossing on White Sulphur Road near Sargent Road in northeast Hall County will be closed for maintenance, so drivers will use an alternate route (a realigned section of White Sulphur Road near the inland port) when the work begins.  The Gainesville Times
  • Alton Thornton will retire from the Jackson EMC Board after 14 years, and Mary Grimsley, a Gainesville educator and business owner, has been named to replace him. Grimsley brings strong local board experience and community ties—skills that will guide her in maintaining quality service for the cooperative.  97.5 Glory

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The old Blue Ridge Shopping Center site on Shallowford Road now hosts the new Tessa rental community that opened Monday, Aug. 11; it will add townhomes and single-family homes when finished in May 2026 — marking a fresh start for the area.  The Gainesville Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • East Forsyth beat Dawson County 19-16 after its defense blocked a field goal in overtime—Jony Aguilera then kicked a 26-yard chip shot to win the game on Friday night.  AccessWDUN
  • North Hall beat Wesleyan 41-7 on Friday at the Brickyard with Wyatt Tumlin running 99 yards for a touchdown and gathering 221 yards on 10 carries - the Trojans recorded 609 yards on offense and held Wesleyan to 244 yards. The team will host Cherokee Bluff next Friday and play East Hall on Sept 5 as they continue their season.  AccessWDUN
  • Six northeast Georgia high school football teams with new head coaches (Johnson and Dawson did not play) started their season last week; the four that competed finished 1-3 overall. Rabun County won its game while West Hall, Flowery Branch and Commerce lost, and Dawson County will face East Forsyth while Johnson travels to Franklin County soon.  AccessWDUN
